Let’s talk about Scythe

Scythe board game set up with mechs

Let’s talk about Scythe baby, let’s talk about you and me….Let’s talk about Scythe. Yea that just happened, there is no going back now, that’s going on the internet. For real though, the point of this blog is going to be talking about my favorite board game Scythe and it’s many expansions.

I’ll be breaking down the game in various aspects ranging from product review, strategy, favorite play styles/factions, and everything in between! I don’t claim to be an expert in the game but I do play quite a bit. I also own every expansion, promo item, and collector’s item available(to my knowledge anyway). We won’t even speak out loud how much that cost me, take my money, Jamey!

Game Summary

A very basic summary of the game could be as follows: An economy building, territory grabbing, wealth building, enemy crushing, steampunk strategy game. The end goal is to make your faction the strongest and wealthiest. Set in what I describe to my friends as a post-WW1 dystopian timeline if WW1 was fought using giant machines.

I love Scythe, big thanks to Jamey Stegmaier for creating it! My favorite thing about Scythe is how it has little to no luck. You win or lose based on your decisions and your decisions alone! I find it hard to be salty at the end of the game when I know I was simply outplayed. Unlike other games of comparable scale and quality such as risk, in which you may find yourself at the mercy of the dice. #Nerdrage #Tableflip Speaking of strategy, here is a link to my general strategy post! https://thedailyscythe.com/quick-tips-scythe/

I also love that it’s not totally linear, there is only one way to win(End game wealth), but several ways to achieve that victory. Also, the board is literally asymmetric, which is rad. The recent addition of the modular board gives the game even more customization and replayability. More on that specifically in a later post though. The last thing I’ll say is that the game is very aesthetically pleasing. Jakub Rozalski’s art is a real treat for the eyes as you contemplate your next move. Let me know what your favorite thing about Scythe is in the comments!

You can buy Scythe here on Amazon, I think you will love it! This is an affiliate link so I get a small kickback should you purchase. Happy gaming!
